Given his top-performer status at a leading consulting firm, this candidate was a particularly tough close. He was on the fast track and likely would have made Partner, but I convinced him to join the strategy group of a leading investment bank—his first move out of professional services. After several years, he transitioned to another bank, eventually becoming Global Head of Strategy and Product Development in Asset Management. His most significant move, however, came when he joined a former colleague at one of the world’s largest asset managers, with over $1 trillion under management. He started as Head of Strategy and was soon promoted to COO. While leading strategy, we placed a VP under him who now holds the Head of Strategy role. She was a fast-tracked consultant covering financial institutions before we recruited her to a leading consumer products company, where she focused on strategy, operations, transformation, and brand launches. After five years, though we had another opportunity lined up (we value long-term relationships), she chose a different path and joined a major e-commerce company, first in European strategy, then as a general manager across several countries.
